Developing intercultural communicative competence in language teaching

Abstract

Language and culture are closely connected and many linguistic phenomena reflect the influences of culture on language. Moreover, learners of a language cannot be competent in that language solely by their language skills. This paper approaches the nature of language and language learning from the sociocultural perspective and explores how language teachers can foster learners' intercultural communicative competence. The findings are hoped to have implications for teaching and learning.
